How to connect your computer to the Internet
Step 1: Determine the Ethernet card address for your computerWindows: Go to the START button, select RUN, type in COMMMAND, then click on OK. Type in IPCONFIG/ALL and then enter. Record the ethernet adapter physical address (i.e.) 00a449c23bd8 of the "Ethernet adapter" (this almost always starts with "00")
**Note: The PPP adapter shown in the IP Configuration box is your modem.
Mac OS X: From System Preferences, click on the "Network" icon. Click the "Configure" button. Choose the "Ethernet" tab and record the Ethernet ID. (i.e.) 00a449c23bd8
Step 2: Determine the jack in your room that you will use
When applying for your connection, you'll be asked for your hall/apartment name, room number and jack information. Enter the jack designation as listed below:
Apartments (Ariel, Caledonia, Champlain, Elliot, Packet, Scorpion, Somers, Turner, Yarnall): Enter a, b, c, or d
Upper Residence Halls/Suites (Almy, Ohio, Porcupine, Tiffany, Tigress): Enter jack number e.g. 225 (note: In Ohio and Almy halls, only 2 jacks per room are active; 1 per side).
Lower Residence Halls (Lawrence, Niagara, Perry, Senat): Enter jack number sequence e.g. A0196 Where labels are not present, the bottom jack(s) in a wall plate are for data.
Step 3: Submit a web-based connection application
Go to: http://www.rescom.psu.edu/
Click on the "Online Ethernet Registration" link
Read all information and follow the yellow diamond icons until prompted to log-in.
Log-in with your Access Account User ID and Password, read any notices that are posted, and click "Continue".
In the "Campus" category, select "Behrend", and leave the "Request" box set at "New". Click on the "Submit" button.
On the second page, fill in the semester you want the connection activated, your building, room number, and jack designation (as per the instructions above. This designation is not "optional" and must be entered to complete the application).
In the Computer Information section, enter your Ethernet card address (no dashes), and finally, your computer make and model. Click on submit
If the connection request is accepted, your network information will display. Print out this information and use it with the following procedures to configure your computer for network connectivity. Connection requests are processed, and residence hall jacks are activated, within 3 business days.
Step 4: Update the network setting of your computer
Follow these steps to configure your Windows 2000 or Windows XP computer for network connectivity:
Click the "Start" button on your PC's desktop.
Go to "Settings", (or Control Panel in WXP).
Select "Control Panel"
Find the "Network and Dial-up Connections" icon and double-click on it.
Find the "Local Area Connection" icon and double-click on it.
Single click on the "Properties" button.
In the resulting "Local Area Connection Properties" window, single-click on the TCP/IP line and then single-click on the "Properties" button.
Select the radio button next to "Use the following IP address" and enter the IP number, subnet mask, and default gateway you were assigned when you applied for your connection.
At the bottom of the "Local Area Connection Properties" box, use the same procedure to enter your assigned DNS server numbers and then single-click on the "Advanced" button. Select the "DNS" tab and choose the radio button next to the line that reads "Append these DNS suffixes (in order)". Enter these DNS suffixes: psu.edu and bd.psu.edu
Exit back to your control panel by clicking "OK" on this window and the next two that display, then close the "Local Area Connection Status. window.
Your network connection settings should now be established. If you are still unable to reach a web page, restart your computer and try again.
